September Garden Club Meeting

The following was an email sent out by Monica Swindle of the PC Garden Club. All accompanying photos and words are courtesy of Monica. Thank you for the kind words, Monica! :)

"What's Happening on the Farm?

Anybody who has been to a Bill White restaurant knows he has the Midas touch when it comes to creating an enjoyable dining experience.

This also rings true for his farm that was the meeting place of our September Garden Club.  His mission: "To create a cooperative community-based experiment by enhancing the entry corridor into Park City, while expanding the agricultural use to reflect the trend to locally grown food".

Our tour began underneath the 100 year old Black Willow Tree with Bill as our enthusiastic guide.  The flower beds, ponds, apple trees, multiple out-buildings and terracing has taken two years to develop (so far).  It is obviously a labor of love for Bill and we were blown away with the progress he has made in restoring the historic Hixon Farm.

Here are just a few pictures that were taken during the hour-and-a-half tour.  Thank you to Bill and his staff for making our visit so wonderful!

And thanks to our hostess, Jane Washington, whose lovely yard and gardens were a perfect end to a memorable evening."

An Update On The Bees

We're keeping bees here at Bill White Farms in an effort to help nurture bee populations. With the hive collapses around the United States that have been occurring recently, bees are more important than ever! These little guys (and girls!) fly around our organic farm all day long, capturing pollen and spreading it from flower to flower. They bring all that pollen back to one center location- the hive.

Our hives at Bill White Farms are nestled right next to the apple trees, and the bees are loving it! We had Doug, the expert beekeeper, come by on Monday to assess whether the bees had produced enough honey for the winter. They are looking good, but since this is a first-year hive, there won't be enough honey for us humans to steal. ;)

We had honey bees last year as well, but unfortunately the colony collapsed. You can read more about Colony Collapse Disorder here.

The bees seem happy and healthy here at our farm, with plenty of flowers to buzz around to. Check out these awesome photos and videos below!

In this video, Doug explains how the bees are helping to feed the babies of the hive. The bees grow into full adults in just 4 days! Watch this video below to learn more from Doug:
